Trial date set for former Minister of Justice [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, August 4, 2021 - 18:05

Nuku'alofa Supreme Court.

The trial of a former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Sione Vuna Fa’otusia is now set for September 16 on charges, relating to a dispute over a stolen cow in 2019.

Prosecution confirmed the case was mentioned on Tuesday, August 3 before Hon. Mr Justice Cooper, at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court.

In December last year, Fa’otusia pleaded not guilty to two charges of interference with the course of justice and use of threatening language to a government servant, in this case police officers.

His charges related to an incident on January 12, 2019, during a police investigation into a stolen cow, when police officers retrieved the cow from a property at Ha'ateiho.

The alleged offences occured when the defendant (who was the Minister of Justice at the time) telephoned the police officers.
