Lecture on Chinese Culture at Queen Salote College [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - 05:58.  Updated on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 - 18:53.

With the increasing closer relations between China and Tonga, the traditional Chinese culture is becoming more appealing to people in the kingdom. This is the very reason for Chinese Embassy to be invited to give a lecture on Chinese culture and customs in Queen Salote College on May 18, 2007.

With so much to talk about, Selina Yin, the lecturer mainly focused on the most important traditional Chinese holidays, including Chinese New Year's Eve, the Spring Festival, Lantern's Day, Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Day. These holidays have been part of Chinese tradition for thousands of years and they are an essential part of Chinese culture. Some traditional food also appeared in the lecture such as dumpling (jiaozi), glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves (zongzi) and the moon-cake (yuebing).

Through carefully-selected pictures and Selina's vividly lecturing, students were deeply impressed and attracted by Chinese special customs and traditional food. What followed next was an exhibition of Chinese handicrafts with beautiful music. The over 200 students mainly from form 5 and form 6 were also quizzed after the lecture and awarded with Chinese handicrafts. It was really amazing that the students were so actively involved in the lecture and their answers were so accurate. Chinese Embassy, 22/05/07.
