Tongan swimmer disqualified after good swim [1]

A disappointing result for swimmer Amini Fonua in Team Tonga's first competition last night when he was disqualified after finishing his event with a good swim in Heat 1 of the Men's 100m Breaststroke at the Tokyo Acquatics Centre.

The results posted on the Olympic website did not give any reasons for the disqualification.

When contacted by Matangi Tonga Online today, TASANOC Secretary General Takitoa Taumoepeau in Tokyo said the disqualification was “very disappointing but a good swim by Amini.”

Takitoa said the swim team would make a clear explanation, “but something to do with his kicking under water.”

Meanwhile, the swim team said their manager was drafting a press release “and to be approved first by our Chef de Mission and NOC.”
