A 20-year-old man from Vaini died on Sunday morning, July 4 after a road crash at Malapo near Hu’atolitoli Prison. 

Deputy Commissioner of Police Tevita Vailea said today, the deceased was the front passenger, while a 25-year-old man also from Vaini was driving.

The two were heading to town when their car swerved and crashed into a power pole on the side of the road. Police received the report, after midnight.

Speeding and alcohol were reported to be factors in this fatal crash. Methamphetamine was also found on the driver, he said.

Meanwhile, the driver who sustained injuries was treated at Vaiola Hospital. He was discharged on the same day.

He is now in police custody charged with reckless driving causing death, at this stage. An investigation continues, said the Deputy Commissioner.
