Tongan Seasonal Worker, Hiko Lynch (23) of Holonga in Tongatapu died early Sunday morning, June 20 after he was allegedly stabbed in Blenheim, Marlborough.

Police in Blenheim reported there was an altercation between the local RSE (seasonal) workers and members of a Rebels gang from outside Marlborough.

Two men aged 33 and 37 have been jointly charged with his murder.

In Nuku'alofa, the CEO for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Dr Fotu Fisi'iahi confirmed the death this afternoon, and extended their deepest condolences to Lynch's mother Tupou and family for their devastating loss. 

It was reported that two other Tongan men who were injured from this incident are in a stable condition at the hospital.

Dr Fisi'iahi said the body of the deceased had been taken to Christchurch to complete the coroner's report, which should be finished this week.

“We plan to return him to Tonga on the repatriation flight on June 30. The two other men will also be returned home once they recover,” he said.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the deceased was out on Saturday night celebrating a friend's birthday with other seasonal workers, when this incident occured at around 3:00am, at Market St. Blenheim. A total of 10 arrests were made relating to the incident.

Tribute

Hiko's employer, Hortus Ltd., in a post on facebook described him as a cool and easy-going guy, who loved sports.

He was with Hortus in his third season, since being away from Tonga from November 2019 due to COVID-19.

“Hiko earned money to support his family in Tonga and also planned to get married on his return. His life ended too soon, but his memory will live on through everyone who had the pleasure to know him,” said Hortus.
