Tonga at the World Meteorological Organisation Congress [1]

The Hon. Minister for Transport and Meteorological Services Mr. Paul Karalus and the Director for Meteorology, Mr. 'Ofa Fa'anunu are attending the 15TH World Meteorological Organization [WMO], Geneva, Switzerland.
In his statement at the opening of the 15th Session of Congress, the Hon. Minister called on WMO and its Members to assist Tonga in the area of Resource Mobilization in the field of Meteorology and in particular assist in developing multi-skilled human resources across all related sectors taking into account the available resources of our small islands. In his speech he also requested WMO and its Members to assist Tonga in the trading of carbon credits as a means of adaptation to the effects of Global Warming and associate climate change and climate variability.
Since Tonga became a member of the World Meteorological Organization in 1996, Tonga has benefited from various WMO Programmes such as human resource development and capacity building. In recent times, WMO played a very important role in the implementation of Tonga's Weather Forecasting Centre in Fua'amotu in 2004.
The 3 week Assembly (May 7-25) which is held every 4 years effects the adoption of the Work Plan and Budget of the Organization for the fiscal term 2008-11. 'Ofa Fa'anunu, 09/05/07.
