Forum-Fiji Working Group on the Situation in Fiji [1]

The Working Group held its fourth meeting at the Forum Secretariat Headquarters in Suva on 3 May 2007, attended by senior officials from Australia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands and Tuvalu.

The Working Group received a briefing on preparations for Fiji...’s 2007 census from Ratu Timoci Bainimarama, Government Statistician of Fiji, and senior officials from the Statistics Office.

The Working Group continued its discussion of the proposed team of experts to conduct the Independent Technical Assessment of the Election Timetable for Fiji, and agreed to refer the proposals to member governments for further consideration.

The Working Group further discussed the standing issues (the restoration of civilian rule, upholding the 1997 Constitution, the cessation of human rights abuses and addressing allegations of abuse, and support for a credible and independent anti-corruption commission).

The Working Group will hold its next meeting on 17 May 2007. Forum Secretariat, 03/05/07.
