Prizes of up to AUD$3,000 are being offered in an amateur photographic and media competition for seasonal workers, launched by the Tonga High Commission in Canberra, Australia.
Announcing the prizes yesterday, the High Commissioner, HRH Princess Angelika Lātūfuipeka Tuku'aho, invited Tongan seasonal workers and individuals who are working in Australia to submit their photographs, drawings or 3-5 minute videos and stories that capture positive experiences under the seasonal worker programs.
“The Tonga High Commission is looking for creativity, positive outlook, beneficial, inspiring, clear, productivity and cooperation to be reflected in your submission,” she said.
The High Commissioner stated that the aim of the competition is to celebrate the success of the Seasonal Worker Program and Pacific Labour Scheme, and to highlight the positive impact on individuals and countries (Australia and Tonga).
It also aims to commend the contribution of farm owners and companies who employ Tongan workers, while creating better understanding from different perspectives.
“Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the year 2020 and 2021 have been challenging for Tonga, Australia, and the world. Nevertheless, the Seasonal Workers Program and the Pacific Labour Scheme has been rendered with an avenue of opportunities for Tongan workers and direct economic benefits to individuals and families.
“The Seasonal Workers Program and Pacific Labour Scheme contributed to ensuring economic growth for Tonga and Australia during this trying time,” the High Commissioner stated.
