Five PR's hearing adjourned to May 3 [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, April 30, 2007 - 17:39.  Updated on Monday, July 20, 2015 - 16:15.

The Preliminary Inquiry hearing of five People's Representatives, charged with crimes relating to the November 16 riots, that was scheduled to start today has been adjourned to Thursday, May 3.

The adjournment is to allow time for the Crown Prosecution team and the counsel for the defendants to discuss amendments that have been made to some of the charges, and for the defendants to study new charges that were served on them this morning.

Crown Prosecutor Little told the court that the outcome of his discussion with the defence counsel would be submitted to Police Magistrate Peau Pifeleti before the hearing on Thursday.

The five PRs, 'Akilisi Pohiva, Clive Edwards, 'Isileli Pulu, Lepolo Taunisila, and 'Uliti Uata have been charged with sedition and other crimes relating to the November 16 riots.

Clive Edwards supported the move for adjournment until Thursday, because of confusion over new charges that had been served, but he said that they want the inquiry to start as soon as possible.

The defence side is bringing in two New Zealand lawyers to help with the defending of their cases.
