New Supreme Court judge from UK [1]

Mr Nicholas Cooper of the United Kingdom has been appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Tonga.

HM King Tupou VI in a Privy Council decision approved the appointment.

Hon. Justice Cooper will be sworn in by Lord Chief Justice Michael H. Whitten QC on March 1, in Nuku'alofa.

This new judge comes to Tonga with extensive experience specialising in criminal prosecutions, including prosecutions for financial crimes; disclosures; armed criminal gangs; illicit drugs importations; large scale Class A drug supply by criminal gangs; and corruption in public officials.

He was with the 15 NBS law firm, based in London.

Meanwhile, he replaces former judge, Hon. Justice Charles Cato who retired and left Tonga for New Zealand last year.
