Government signs new Electricity Concession Contract [1]

A new five years Electricity Concession Contract, to secure the supply of electricity to Tonga’s main island groups of Tongatapu, ‘Eua, Ha’apai and Vava’u was signed in Nuku’alofa on 12 January 2021.

The contract was signed on the behalf of government by  Hon Tevita Lavemaau, the Minister for Finance and National Planning; the chairperson of the joint Utilities Board, Dr ‘Aisake Eke who signed on the behalf of the Tonga Power Ltd, and by the Chairperson of the Tonga Electricity Commission, Rev ‘Alifeleti ‘Atiola.

Under the Electricity Concession Contract ECC Tonga Power Ltd will generate, distribute and supply electricity to consumers.

Previously, Government had set a target for Tonga’s electricity supply to be 70% renewable energy by 2030. 

The 2021 Electricity Concession Contract is the third to be signed, following the enactment of the Electricity Act in 2007, and the establishment of the Tonga Electricity Commission.
