New dates to be set for hearing of five People's Reps' cases [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tuesday, April 3, 2007 - 18:05.  Updated on Monday, July 20, 2015 - 12:20.

The Preliminary Hearing of the five People's Representatives in connection to the events of November 16 that was scheduled to begin today is further adjourned for new dates to be set.

Peter Little a counsel from New Zealand who is joining a team from Tonga's Crown Law Department in prosecuting major cases relating to the November 16 riots said today that the People's Representatives cases will be mentioned in the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court on Thursday, April 5 and new dates will be set.

Peter said that he had just arrived in Tonga on March 26 and there was insufficient time to prepare for the cases, so they met in Chambers on Friday March 29 and asked for the hearings to be adjourned this week.

Lepolo Taunisila, the Niuas People's Representative, was scheduled to appear first today, followed by four other PRs including 'Akilisi Pohiva, 'Isileli Pulu, William Clive Edwards and 'Uliti Uata.
