The first shipment of 16.6 metric tonnes of Tongan watermelons was exported to Auckland, New Zealand on December 17, after the October ban was lifted

Local farmer and exporter, Minoru Nishi Jr, Manager of Nishi Trading said today, it was a proud moment for everyone who were present, at Fua'amotu International Airport.

“It's a new milestone for Tonga's agriculture sector,” he said.

The freight was sent on an Air New Zealand flight by Nishi Trading Co. Ltd, the exporter for two Tongatapu farmers.

Minoru said they had all put in extraordinary time and effort to make this initiative happen, “which proves that when we work together cohesively, with good intentions and a good heart, we can achieve our goals.”

"Our last hope is that the inspection of our watermelons today brings back good news so that we can continue another day."

Minoru said for the next one, much will depend on the market in New Zealand because their domestic season had started already, although there is a shortage.

"We hope to continue this new mode of transport for our fresh produce in future as they aim to add new lines of products."

However, we need to reduce the freight rate even further in order for the trade to be viable in the long run. We also need to strengthen the partnerships of stakeholders associated with the trade to ensure it is sustainable, he said.

Minoru said, looking ahead, they need the support of our government to open new pathways, to understand the challenges of private sector and work to address these challenges and any ongoing issues.

"Only then, can we build a stronger and more vibrant economy for Tonga."

Minoru acknowledged their farmers and the strong support from the Ministry of Primary Industries and New Zealand MFAT office, New Zealand High Commissioner to Tonga, HE Tiffany Babington and staff, Ministry of Agriculture and staff and Tonga MPI Audit Team, and many others.

Meanwhile, this is Tonga's first export since New Zealand halted the importation of watermelons from Tonga, two-months ago following the discovery of live fruit fly in a consignment.
