Dangerous driver pleads guilty to causing death on Hihifo Road [1]

Simione Ikahihifo (55) pleaded guilty last week to causing the road death of ‘Aisea Kaifa (66) on Hihifo Road at Sia'atoutai in August this year.
The Crown said today, the accused pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing grievous harm.
He appeared before Hon Mr Justice Niu, at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court.
The offence occured on the night of August 11 this year, when the accused was driving a Datsun van in a easterly direction on Hihifo Road.
He attempted to overtake a vehicle in front of him and collided head on with a car driving in the opposite direction, leading to the death of the victim, who was the driver in his car.
Alcohol was a factor in the collision.
The accused from Longolongo will be sentenced on January 21, 2021. He is currently on bail.
The victim who was from New Zealand was living in Kanokupolu.
