Tokaikolo Church President dies in NZ on eve of Lavengamalie College anniversary [1]

The President of the Tokaikolo Church, Rev Dr Liufau Vailea Saulala (75) passed away on Thursday, November 19 at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland, his son, Sangster Saulala confirmed today, in Nuku'alofa.

The funeral is expected to be held in Auckland on a date to be confirmed soon, he said.

The prominent church leader remained abroad, after leaving Tonga just before the border closed in March this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, the church was scheduled this week to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Lavengamalie College, of which he was principal. This has been postponed due to his passing.

Rev. Dr Saulala also founded Christ’s University in 2004, where he was Vice-Chancellor. In a farewell tribute the University mourned his passing.

Rev. Dr Saulala is survived by his children and grandchildren. His wife, Falamoni Naitoko Saulala predeceased him.

Meanwhile, tributes have been flowing on social media with prayer services being held simultaneously in Tonga and abroad by church members.
