Int'l hotel group signs lease for resort on Tonga's Taunga island [1]

Tongan Prime Minister Hon. Dr Feleti Sevele signs an agreement with Tammie Tam of Warwick International Hotel Group, on Taunga.

Warwick International Hotel Group has signed a lease with the Government of Tonga to build a resort in the 'Friendly Islands.'

The lease allows Warwick to build a resort on part of the island of Taunga and on the island of Ngau, adjoined by a sand bar. The location is six miles from Neiafu, the main town of the Vava'u group of Islands.

Tonga's Prime Minister, the Hon Dr Feleti Sevele, said in his speech officially confirming the new lease arrangement "the signing was an historic moment because it is the first time that an international hotel chain has started the development of a resort in Tonga."

"Warwick International Hotels' commitment to invest in the tourist industry in Tonga is a major vote of confidence for the Government and People of Tonga and especially for Vava'u,"

The Group now operates the Le Lagon resort in Vanuatu, Naviti Resort and Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa in Fiji, and is presently constructing a resort in Samoa.

Mr Jamal Serhan, Vice President/ Regional General Manager, South Pacific, Warwick International said that "hard work had just begun."

"We are grateful to the Tongan Government for entrusting us with this project. We will now begin developing detailed plans for the resort. A start date has yet to be finalized," said Mr. Serhan.

He said that the new lease reflected the Warwick's commitment to the region in the development of resorts and investment.

The signing took place on Taunga, between Miss Tammie Tam, Senior Vice President of Warwick International Hotels and Executive Director for Fiji and the Pacific and the Hon. Lord Tuita, Minister for Lands, Survey, Natural Resources and the Environment for Tonga. This was done in the presence of HRH Princess Pilolevu. - George Rubine Public Relations Ltd. 13/3/07.
