New traffic infringements [1]

A total of 234 people were issued with new traffic infringement notices and penalties in Tongatapu mainly for speeding, in a two-weeks traffic operation by Tonga Police, between October 12-25.
Of the notices issued:
- 88 were for speeding
- 61 for non-compliance with quarterly licensing of vehicle,
- 13 for unlicensed driving
- 13 for failure to produce driver’s license
- 11 for reckless driving
- seven for the use of mobile phones while driving
- nine for drivers not wearing seatbelts
- two for front passengers not wearing seatbelts
- four for driver causing loud music, among other infringements.
Police reminded the public today of the importance to adhere to to the new traffic law.
Earlier, in a one-week police operation from October 5-11, a total of 93 infringement notices were issued, in which 42 were for speeding and two for not wearing seatbelts, among others.
Fines must be paid within 21-days or offenders face court.
The infringement notices and penalties are enforced by Tonga Police under a new Traffic Act 2020 that came into effect on October 1 to keep roads safe.
