Tu'ivakano's appeal awaits judgment [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, October 22, 2020 - 19:38

An appeal this week by Lord Tu'ivakano against his conviction is now awaiting judgment from Tonga's Court of Appeal.

The appeal of Tonga's former Prime Minister and current Tongatapu Noble's Representative to Parliament was heard on Tuesday, October 20.

He is appealing against his conviction, after a jury found him guilty in March on three charges of making a false statement for the purpose of obtaining a Tongan passport, perjury and possession of an arm and ammunition without a license.

The Supreme Court said today the judgment will be issued once they are ready.

The appeal was heard by Justices Blanchard, Moore and White via video link.

Meanwhile, the only other appeal was a land case, Kaufusi & Hua v Veatupu & Ors heard on Monday, October 19.

Sitting on this appeal was Lord Chief Justice Whitten, in person in Nuku'alofa with Justices Blanchard and Moore via video link.

The Appeal Court which had its first session earlier this year was held via video link for the first time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has caused travel restrictions and border closures.
