A total of 93 people were issued with new infringement notices and penalties in Tongatapu mainly for speeding, in a one-week traffic operation by Tonga Police, between October 5-11.

Of the 93 notices issued:

  • 42 were for speeding,
  • 19 for non-compliance with quarterly licensing of vehicle,
  • 13 for failure to produce driver’s license,
  • 8 for unlicensed driving,
  • 2 for the use of mobile phones while driving,
  • 2 for not wearing seatbelts and
  • one for driver causing loud music, among other infringements.

Chief Inspector Lemoto Piliu, Road Safety Manager said today there was high compliance as most drivers and front passengers had adhered to the new law, especially by wearing their seatbelts and not using mobile phones while driving.

In a four-days police operation from October 1-4, a total of 57 infringement notices were issued, in which 16 were for failure to wear seatbelts.

Fines must be paid within 21-days or offenders face court.

Meanwhile, the traffic operation continues to keep roads safe.

The infringement notices and penalties are enforced by Tonga Police under a new Traffic Act 2020 that came into effect on October 1.
