The 29-year-old male Police Constable who was arrested and charged with rape and indecent assault of an 18-year-old young woman while she was in police custody, remains detained.

A Police investigation continues. The accused man is expected to appear at the Magistrate’s Court on October 12, said the police spokesperson today.

These offences allegedly occurred on Sunday, September 27, while the young woman was in police custody in a cell at an unspecified location in Tongatapu.

No other details was released as the matter is now with the Court.

Meanwhile, the offences were reported to Police on September 29 and after a criminal investigation, the accused officer was arrested on October 1.

This matter is also a subject of a separate Professional Standards investigation and the Police Commissioner suspended him prior to his arrest.
