500 soroban abacus from Japan were handed over to the Ministry for Education on October 5 at Pahu.

Japanese Ambassador HE Mr Tetsuya Ishii said the sorobans were from Ono City in Hyogo Prefecture in Japan for soroban students in Tonga.

“Education is one of the fields that Japan highly prioritizes in its cooperation with Tonga. It is our greatest pleasure to contribute to the further development of soroban education in Tonga,” he said.

In addition, he remained committed to furthering abacus education in Tonga and collaborating through soroban to deepen the friendship between the two countries and peoples.

The Minister for Education Hon Siaosi Sovaleni thanked Japan for the generous donation of the sorobans.

The annual soroban nationals will be held in Nuku'alofa in November, after district competitions this year.
