A 29-year-old male Police Constable has been arrested and charged with rape and indecent assault of an 18-year-old young woman, while she was in police custody.

Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell said this allegedly occurred on Sunday, September 27.

The young woman was in police custody at an unspecified location. 

He said the offences were reported to Police on Tuesday September 29, and after a criminal investigation, the accused officer was arrested on October 1.

The matter is also a subject of a separate Professional Standards investigation, and the Commissioner suspended suspended the officer prior to his arrest. 

The accused appeared at the Magistrate's Court today and is remanded in custody, while an investigation continues. 

"This matter is now before the Court and we wish to protect the privacy of this young woman and her family. Full victim support services to her and her family have been put in place," said the Commissioner.
