The newly-named Tonga Research Association (TRA) formerly known as the Tonga History Association will hold their 12th bi-annual conference in Nuku'alofa on July 11-14.
This multidisciplinary association for the advancement of Tongan studies will conduct their conference on the theme "Tonga, its land, seas and people" at the Moulton Hall, Nuku'alofa, and papers in any area of Tongan studies are invited to be presented during the conference.
The organizers in a call for papers said that abstracts of proposed papers are required by 30 March, and conference registration is due by 30 April.
Siua Fonua the Secretary of the TRA in Tonga said that they are expecting over 100 participants for the conference because it is held in Tonga and overseas participants are interested to come and attend and also to see the state of the capital since the riots of November 16, 2006.
Siua said that the conference, which is held every two years was last held in Melbourne, Australia, in 2005.
"It was after our last conference in Melbourne that the idea of changing the association's name from Tonga History Association to the Tonga Research Association came up because we thought that the title Tonga History was limited to history topics only, and we wanted to widen the association so as to accommodate other various topics not just in history, so the name was changed to the Tonga Research Association," he said.
The President of the TRA is Dr 'Asinate Samate, with Dr Elizabeth Wood Ellem as vice president.
