Ha'apai parliamentarian charged with sedition [1]

‘Uliti Uata, the Ha'apai no. 1 People's Representative was arrested by the Tonga Police at noon last Friday, March 2 for interrogation relating to the riot on November 16, 2006.

Police Prosecutor Mema Latu confirmed today, that after 'Uliti was arrested and interrogated he was charged with four counts, two of sedition and one each for unlawful assembly and rioting. 'Uliti was released on bail the same day at 4.30 pm.

'Uliti was the fifth People's Representative to have been arrested and charged with criminal offences relating to the riot of November 16, 2006, but he was the only one that was not kept overnight in prison. The other four PRs who spent at least one night in prison were 'Akilisi Pohiva, 'Isilei Pulu, William Clive Edwards and Lepolo Taunisila.

Police Prosecutor Mema Latu said that 'Uliti appeared at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court yesterday, February 5 and he was scheduled to appear for his preliminary inquiry hearing on April 13.
