An agreement to improve training and employment opportunities for students at the Tonga Institute of Science and Technology (TIST) was signed with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) on 4 September, in Nuku’alofa.
The partnership will also further develop the capacity of trainers and strengthen the Technical and Vocational Education and Training sector in Tonga.
The agreement was signed virtually by APTC CEO, Soli Middleby and the Ministry of Education and Training CEO, Dr Tangikina Steen on behalf of Tonga Institute of Science and Technology.
Australian High Commissioner HE Adrian Morrison commended the APTC and TIST for the positive initiative.
“The goal of the APTC, as an Australian Government investment in the Pacific, has always been to contribute to a more prosperous region driven by a skilled, inclusive and productive workforce."
“We welcome initiatives that promote economic growth and mobility of skills and qualifications. Because we know these factors contribute much to economic growth,” he said.
The APTC has produced more than 560 graduates in Tonga, and trained more than 15,000 graduates in the Pacific.
The virtual agreement was also attended by Senior Program Manager, Kepreen Veetutu, TIST Principal Nonga Soakai, MET Assistant Deputy CEO Kalolaine Moeaki, and APTC Country Engagement Liaison Coordinator Kasanita Holani.
