A 47-year-old man was sentenced today at the Supreme Court to two-years imprisonment for two counts of serious indecent assault of a woman in Tongatapu.
The Chief Justice directed that the identity of the complainant and her evidence taken in the proceedings must not be published.
Lord Chief Justice Whitten imposed the sentence, after finding him guilty on July 27 for the serious offences in 2018.
On the first count he was sentenced to two-years imprisonment and 18-months on the second. Both sentences are to be served concurrently, he said.
In addition, the final 12-months of the head sentence is suspended for that period on conditions that during suspension, he shall not commit any offence punishable by imprisonment.
He must also live where directed by his probation officer, not consume alcohol and complete courses on alcohol and sexual abuse.
“Failure to fulfill any of the above conditions may result in the defendant being returned to prison to serve the balance of the head sentence.”
