Siliako Matangi To’aho was sentenced at the Supreme Court to three-years imprisonment for serious bodily harm, when he fractured the bone on his wife's hand with a hammer.

Hon. Mr Justice Cato sentenced the accused on July 17, after he had pleaded guilty to the one count in June.

The Court heard in 2019 at Fasi, the accused caused harm to his wife when he used a hammer to repeatedly hit her hand, causing a fracturing to her right ulnar bone.

The Crown submitted the aggravating factors was that he was the victim’s husband and a repeat offender.

The seriousness of the offending was that he caused a fracture to her right ulnar bone, using a hammer to exert violence on his wife. Based on the offending and the relevant authorities cited it is appropriate to impose a custodial sentence, said the Crown.

“The accused whose previous convictions, included physical abuse and common assault has clear anger management issues,”

Meanwhile, on a second count of domestic violence the plea was vacated, after the Crown offered no evidence.

The sentence was backdated to when the accused was first detained in Police custody.
