Shot-putter, Dame Valerie Adams has been honoured with a Barbie doll made in her likeness, after she was chosen as New Zealand’s Barbie Role Model for 2020.

The role model campaign honours amazing women every year around the globe in an effort to inspire more girls.

The Barbie doll is dressed in Valerie’s usual competition gear, with a shot put in her hand, hoop earrings, a watch, and sports bags.

Valerie was involved with the design of the doll, the New Zealand Herald reported.

"They got all the details right," she told the Herald.

"I have six tattoos on my body that are quite important to me, and they definitely showcased me. When I look at the Barbie, all I see is me. The bun, the hoops, all the rest of it. My strapping I wear when I'm throwing.”

"She looks pretty awesome if I do say so myself, she's quite amazing."

"It's even got my freckles which I'm quite excited about," she added. 

Valerie was honoured to be part of a line-up of amazing women year for the campaign.

“As a mum, it is my responsibility to be a positive role model for my daughter and as an athlete, throughout my career I have been able to reach more young girls all around the world especially New Zealand to inspire and empower them to be the best version of themselves,” she said in a facebook post yesterday.

“We definitely need more role models and as a strong Pacific woman, I feel it is my duty to be more accessible and involved in the community, both on and off the field.”

“We need to nurture our future generation to believe and trust in themselves.”

The three-time Olympic medallist is currently training for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
