Two men guilty of sexual offences on minor [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, July 1, 2020 - 17:13

A 51-year-old man was found guilty of rape, while a 22-year-old was guilty of indecent assault committed on a young girl, under the age of 12 in Tongatapu.

Hon Mr Justice Cato in his verdict on June 30, convicted both men on these serious sexual offences that were committed, starting in 2016.

He ordered they be detained in Police custody for sentencing on July 24.

Both had pleaded not guilty to the charges and were tried last month at the Supreme Court.

The 51-year-old was found guilty on charges that included rape, indecent assault and domestic violence. While, the young accused was convicted on one count of indecent assault.

The judge found the young complainant a reliable witness.

“I have no reason to disbelieve the complainant. As one would expect of a child of her age at times she seemed to be confused about dates but essentially as to the sexual allegations, her evidence was in my view credible.”

The complainant's name was suppressed as well as details that might identify her.
