A port upgrade project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is being proposed to develop Queen Salote Wharf as an international gateway container and general cargo terminal.

According to the ADB, the project will build up the wharf to accommodate future trade growth and expansion, and strengthen Tonga’s economic and social connectivity in the Pacific.

The project will also help to cope with the impact of climate change and disasters.

The proposed work, includes rehabilitating, renewing, and expanding the wharf’s existing infrastructure, as well as improving management and operational practices.

A civil works contract worth around USD$34 million will be opened for competitive bidding soon for the project, which includes both marine and landside works, The wharf deck structure will be demolished and reinstated, with a new piled mooring,  and wave barrier protection, along with a southwest extension that will involve dredging

The landside existing areas will be demolished and replaced with about 20,000 square metres of newly surfaced hardstand areas and internal roading. New drainage and ultilities infrastructure will include a new electricity substation, fencing and security systems.

Meanwhile initial environmental examination is ongoing.

The Government and Port of Authority of Tonga staff will be engaged in all aspects of the project through its investigation, design and implementation stages.

Community consultation will also be undertaken during project design and implementation.

Contract prequalification is expected to be in July and the contract awarded in the first quarter of 2021.

The proposed project is listed in ADBs country operations business plan for Tonga, 2019 to 2021, and funded under a grant concessional loan fund and managed by the Ministry of Finance.
