Ministry developing teachers to improve education system [1]

A professional development program for teachers established by the Ministry of Education earlier this year is helping to rebuild Tonga’s education system, aligning it to local, regional and international codes of teaching standards.
The Ministry said in a press release yesterday, the Professional Development Unit run by education professionals, aims to further improve teacher’s skills and practices so students can achieve better learning outcomes.
It also aims to ensure effective ongoing staff development and support, as well as address teaching and learning issues in different contexts.
The unit has already held two workshops in 13 centres, with 11 in Tongatapu and 2 in ‘Eua, between January and March. The team will soon travel to the outer islands to deliver the same workshops.
Starting next year, the team will ensure all teachers are registered, as required by the Teachers’ Registration Regulation, which was recently approved by Cabinet.
The Ministry stated that In its vision to achieve excellence in education, it required well-trained and resourceful teachers who are crucial to achieving better learning outcomes for students.
