People's Rep, 'Isileli Pulu denied bail [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - 19:45.  Updated on Saturday, May 10, 2014 - 18:38.

Tongatapu no. 2 People'’s Representative 'Isileli Pulu was today further remanded in police custody until Tuesday January 30, after his application for bail was denied by the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court.

'‘Isileli has been in custody for two weeks since he was arrested by the Tongan Police on January 10 and charged with sedition and abetting wilful damage to properties.

A reliable source confirmed today, that the reason for the rejection of bail for the PR was due to a deceitful act he committed while in custody, therefore he would remain in police custody for another six days until January 30.

In the meantime, 'Akilisi Pohiva the Tongatapu no. 1 People'’s Representative who also submitted an application for bail at the Supreme Court after he was arrested on January 17 was granted a $2,000 bail on January 19.

The reason for the quick release of 'Akilisi from custody two days later, was said to be due to the fact that there was no further reason to keep him in police custody, as well as his health issues, so he was released but was charged with three counts of sedition.

Two sureties on bail were set at $1,000 each.
