Trial delayed for Lavulavu couple [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, April 29, 2020 - 18:28

'Etuate Lavulavu. Nuku'alofa, 11 January 2018.

A new date is to be set for the joint trial of the Minister for Infrastructure and Tourism Hon ‘Akosita Lavulavu and husband ‘Etuate Lavulavu, at the Supreme Court.

The trial was intially set to start this month but defence counsels are stuck in New Zealand due to CoViD-19, which has closed borders.

Crown Prosecution said on April 27, the case will now be mentioned on May 25 for a new trial date to be set.

The couple have pleaded not guilty to six counts each of knowingly dealing with forged documents and obtaining money by false pretences, relating to a number of irregularities in an audit of the ‘Unuaki ‘o Tonga Royal Institute in 2016.

In August last year, the Supreme Court rejected an application by ‘Etuate to have a separate trial from his wife on the forgery charges.
