Curfew offenders fined and one jailed [1]

Twenty-two people pleaded guilty and were fined, and another was sentenced to three-months imprisonment, at the Magistrate’s Court in Tongatapu last week, for offences under the Emergency Management Act.

The Crown Prosecution said today the 23 accused committed offences under the Emergency Management Act and during curfew hours.

On April 24, 14 accused were convicted in the Nuku’alofa district. Eleven were sentenced to $1,000 pa’anga fine each and three were sentenced to $500 pa’anga each.

On April 23, three were convicted of similar offences in the western district.

When they appeared at the Nukunuku Magistrate's Court, two were sentenced to a fine of $1,000 each. One person was sentenced to three-months imprisonment.

Meanwhile, on the eastern district six accused were convicted of similar offences during curfew hours.

They were all fined $1,000 each at the Mu'a Magistrate’s Court on April 22.

The national curfew currently runs from 9:00pm to 5:00am.
