Three of five people were today sentenced to a fine of $1,000 pa’anga each at the Fasi Magistrate’s Court for breaching restrictions imposed, during the national lockdown.

The Crown Prosecution said, these were the first criminal matters arising out of violations of sections 38 and 39 of the Emergency Management Act. 

Tevita Koi pleaded guilty for failure to comply with direction of an authorised officer and drunkenness in a public place.  

He was sentenced to $1,000 fine and $100 for the drunkenness charge.

‘Amanaki Kioa pleaded guilty to obstruction of an authorised officer and was sentenced to $1,000 fine.

Tenisi Wainiqolo was fined a similar amount for obstruction of an authorised officer.

A fourth accused Kisina Neiufi who was similarly charged with obstruction did not attend Court. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

Penisimani 'Aho pleaded not guilty to obstruction of an authorised officer. His trial has been set for July 7, at the lower court.

Police arrested these accused on the night of April 6-7 during curfew hours (8:00pm-6:00am).

The accused appeared before Magistrate Langi.

To date, more than 100 people have been arrested and charged by Police for breaching restrictions during the lockdown due to COVID-19.
