Aircraft with medical supplies diverted from Tonga [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, April 1, 2020 - 18:28

The Tonga Government has decided against the landing at Fua'amotu International Airport of a chartered aircraft carrying medical supplies from China.

Instead, the medical supplies are expected to be offloaded in Fiji and shipped to Tonga, the Prime Minister Hon Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa, announced on local radio on March 31.

He said the changes agreed were for the chartered aircraft from Air Tahiti Nui to be postponed to arrive in Nadi in mid-April

“We put forth this request because Fua'amotu Airport would not be able to receive the aircraft due to the current national lockdown, among other reasons.

“The medical supplies would still be brought to Tonga but will be shipped over from Fiji at the earliest opportunity,” said the Prime Minister.

The medical supplies donated from China were intended to help Tonga fight the possible influx of COVID-19.
