A total powerstation blackout on Tongatapu for a few hours this morning, was caused by a temporary cooling system failure on the generators.
Tonga Power Ltd Chief Executive Officer, Seti Chen said that an end cap burst on the cooling system pipe works.
“This caused a cascading effect on the temperature cooling for the generators causing them to shut down one at a time and thus a total powerstation blackout.”
“This incident is the first in over 20 years.”
Seti said there was a crack found on the end cap pipe where the cap was glued on.
Tonga Power Ltd workers repaired the part and restored the power after midday.
The blackout gave businesses and others an opportunity to run their backup generators.
