Driver detained after fatal hit and run [1]

Lemoto Manu (31) is the driver charged in the death of local businessman during a hit and run incident on Vuna Road, Nuku'alofa, on Saturday night, December 28, 2019.

He is charged with reckless drunk driving causing the death of Tausinga Taumoefolau (46) from Kolofo‘ou.

Tonga Police confirmed today, the accused from Pahu was still detained in police custody while an investigation continues, pending court.

Police earlier reported that the victim died instantly when the accused who was allegedly driving a speeding mini-van hit the victim's stationary car from behind at around 7pm, and sped away.

Tausinga had stopped to buy tomatoes at the front of the Kimiko Restaurant, and had returned to his small car when the fatal incident happened.

Police arrested the accused later that same night. He was alleged to have been heavily intoxicated at the time.

Tausinga ran a number of businesses in Nuku'alofa, including City Central Cafe, Molisi Save Supermarket in CBD, Nuku'alofa Fishing Club catering and had recently acquired Radio 88.1FM and the Taimi ‘o Tonga newspaper.
