(Pacnews) Fiji's military has denied outright of a breakthrough in mediation talks in New Zealand yesterday.

And its commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama has renewed his threats of what he has termed as a "peaceful clean up campaign" if the Laisenia Qarase led government does not meet its demands in full.

"The meeting in New Zealand yesterday was a failure. As the RFMF expected, the Prime Minister was not forthcoming", Commodore Bainimarama said in a press conference.

This is despite a shift in position by the Fijian Government to accommodate some of the demands by the military.

"“I have heard the press statement that came out this afternoon, I've heard very briefly some of the issues that were discussed and I can say they are all lies. I never said yes".

"“If by tomorrow afternoon it has not answered to our demands then we'’ll take it for granted that we'’ve been endorsed to do the cleaning up campaign in Fiji," Commodore Bainimarama said.

"It is going to be a peaceful transition ...– we hope it's going to be a peaceful transition because we don't expect any opposition."

"“We will expect no confrontation, no opposition. If the government doesn'’t do these clean up then we will do it for them and it will be a peaceful transition. We will look after everyone in Fiji ...– the tourist, the sugarcane farmer "every one of every nationality."

Commodore Bainimarama also warned Mr Qarase that he would be held responsible should there be any foreign intervention in Fiji.

"I want all the demands met tomorrow. Everything that I demand must be met midday tomorrow. Let me say I've heard the Prime Minister mention the Biketawa Declaration -- if ever, if ever, foreign troops land on our shores I will hold him, Qoriniasi Bale and Jioji Kotobalavu responsible.

"“If any of my soldiers get hurt, injured, or God forbid, die, I will hold them responsible. This statement is not meant to put fear in anyone. It will be a peaceful transition. We will protect everyone.

"We need to get rid of those and we need to get rid of the three Bills. We certainly need to get rid of the Police Commissioner."
