Violence against women, the least prosecuted crime in the world [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, November 25, 2019 - 21:27.  Updated on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 - 09:12.

'Onetoto 'Anisi with the PM Hon. Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa, Harbor Deck Cafe, 25 November 2019.

Violence against women is one of the most wide spread violence, but one of the least prosecuted crime in the world, ‘Onetoto ‘Anisi, the Acting CEO for the Ministry of Internal Affairs told a gathering this morning to launch the 16 Days of Activism and White Ribbon Day Programme 2019 in Tonga.

The gathering was attended by the Prime Minister Hon. Dr Pohiva Tu’I’onetoa, who is also the Minister for Internal Affairs; foreign diplomats and some cabinet ministers at the Harbour Deck Café, Taufa’ahau Tupou IV Domestic Wharf in Nuku'alofa.

Speakers included the Salvation Army Regional Commander, Captain Sila Siufanga, ‘Aisea ‘Aholelei, from the Tonga Rugby Union; Tavake Fangupo from the National Rugby League and Betty Blake from the 16 Days of Activism Coordinating Committee.

Their messages were clear that we could bring an end to violence against women.

‘Onetoto, however, reminded the gathering that to bring an end to violence against women will be a tough battle for the human race.

“Violence against women is one of the most wide spread violence, and one of the least prosecuted crime in the world.

“This failure does not stem from the lack of knowledge but rather, a lack of investment and will to meet women needs and to protect their fundamental rights.”

‘Anisi reminded all victims of domestic violence – “Tonga Stands with you. May you be sustained by this solidarity and by the knowledge that we will not rest until you are safe.”
