97 arrests in rugby league celebrations [1]

Ninety-seven people were arrested and charged mostly for drinking alcohol and disorderly behaviour in public places, during and after special celebrations for the Tonga Invitational Rugby League (Kau To’a) on November 15.
Acting Deputy Police Commissioner ‘Atunaisa Taumoepeau said a police special operation was set up in Nuku'alofa to make sure the public was safe.
Police visibility strengthened around the clock, with police on the beat, regular vehicle patrols to key target areas and removal of drunks from public places.
Road safety included spot checks and alcohol breath testing in strategic locations to control drunk driving and speed.
The operation resulted in 88 arrests on Friday, November 15, and nine on Saturday, November 16.
“A majority of the arrests were drunks in public places and alcohol was identified as a key factor."
Otherwise the day’s celebration sawh no other incidents, said the Acting Deputy Commissioner.
He acknowledged the commitment of police staff who worked hard to ensure peace and public safety was maintained.
Tonga Police also thanked members of the public for sharing timely information.
The public holiday held on November 15 was in celebration of the Kau To’a's victories, during the 2019 Oceania Cup. Some of the players returned to the capital where a float parade and other events were held in their honour.
