An odd media release by the Prime Minister today announced: “Behold, the Champion Teams will assemble...”
But the statement did not say where and when, or give any useful information for the public about the expected return to Tonga of the Tonga Rugby League Invitational XIII, following their sensational victory over the Australian Kangaroos last Saturday, November 2.
The Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet, directed that the media statement be issued, and it was signed by the Prime Minister Dr Pohiva Tu‘i‘onetoa.
The obscure first paragraph stated:
“Behold, the Champion Teams will assemble, Comprising Victorious Teams of respective nations. But the Powerhouse of Tonga’s Winning Warriors Team, Is the sacrifice of the Lord Almighty.”
The Prime Minister went on to express “the spirit of immense joy, felicitations, and thankfulness.”
He praised the “the Captain, the Manager, the officials and the Head Coach of the Winning Warriors Tonga Team respectively”.
The media statement ended with a prayer.
However, the statement made no mention of whether or not any members of the team or officials would visit Tonga, or when or if any welcome celebrations were being planned.
The official statements in English and Tongan did not make any mention of a public holiday:
