Jury trial starts for airport 1.9kg meth seizure [1]

A jury trial against Viliami Mangisi (59) charged in relation to the seizure of 1.9 kilograms of methamphetamine at Fua‘amotu International Airport in 2018, began at the Supreme Court today.
The accused from Ha‘avakatolo is being tried on two charges of attempted export of an illicit Class A drug, namely methamphetamine and possession of the illicit drug.
He had pleaded not guilty to the charges and opted for a jury trial, which began on October 14 before Hon. Mr Justice Cato.
Mangisi is alleged to have tried to export from Tonga to New Zealand on May 8, 2018, the seized methamphetamine.
The Crown represented by Tevita ‘Aho has started calling its witnesses, which will continue this week.
The accused, who is represented by Sifa Tu'utafaiva, remains on bail.
