Lord Tu'ivakano case adjourned to October [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, September 11, 2019 - 19:31

An application by Lord Tu'ivakano to strike out several of the charges against him will be heard on October 9 at the Supreme Court in Nuku'alofa.

The case was mentioned last week and was adjourned to the new date.

The court will hear an application by Lord Tu’ivakano to strike out several charges relating to money laundering and bribery, which is opposed by the Crown.

It will also hear an application by the Crown to hold the accused noble's trial together with two other accused Isabella Satua Tu’akoi and ‘Ileana Suliana Taulua, who are charged with similar offences relating to the Tongan passport.

The defence side strongly opposed the Crown's submission to have one trial with all three.

After these matters are heard, a trial date is most likely to be set for sometime in 2020.

Meanwhile on June 14, the noble pleaded not guilty to a total of 15 charges including perjury, money laundering and accepting bribes relating to the issuance of Tongan passports, as well as possession of firearms and ammunition without a license.
