Second Court of Appeal begins [1]

Tonga’s second sitting of the Court of Appeal started on September 2 and will hear five appeals, in Nuku'alofa.
The President of the Tonga Law Society, Loupua Pahulu Kuli welcomed the appeal judges in a short opening, attended by the Attorney General Linda Folaumoetu'i and other counsel.
It was also the first day for Tonga's new Lord Chief Justice Michael Whitten QC from Australia, who is President of the Court of Appeal.
He introduced a new Appeal Court judge, Hon. Justice Richard White who is currently a sitting Judge at the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
Other appeal judges includes Hon. Vice President Kenneth Handley (Australia) and Hon. Justice Sir Peter Blanchard (New Zealand).
The appeals consist of two criminal cases; two land cases and an appeal case from the Magistrate’s Court.
Judgments are expected to be delivered on September 6.
