Appeal Court opens on September 2 [1]

Tonga’s second session of the Court of Appeal will preside over five appeals, starting on September 2 in Nuku'alofa.

The appeals are two criminal cases, two land cases and an appeal from the Magistrate’s Court.

This will also be the first day for Tonga's new Lord Chief Justice Michael Whitten QC from Australia. He is the President of the Court of Appeal.

Appeal judges would also include, Hon. Vice President Kenneth Handley (Australia), Hon. Justice Sir Peter Blanchard (New Zealand) and Hon. Justice Richard White (Australia), who is a new judge to the Appeal Court.

Justice White is currently a sitting Judge at the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

Judgments are expected to be delivered on September 6.
