Multi-national militaries have come together for the 2019 Tafakula Exercise held on Tongatapu from August 12-24, focusing on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief training scenarios.
More than 300 soldiers are taking part from the United States Marine Corps, Australian Infantry Regiment, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, French Armed Forces in New Caledonia with Tonga's His Majesty's Armed Forces (HMAF).
HMAF said today, the exercise not only aims to build and enhance the interoperability and sharing of expertise amongst visiting military forces in the Pacific with HMAF.
It will focus on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief training scenarios for times of natural disaster crises.
The exercise is being held at Taliai Military Camp in Fua'amotu and will extend to other areas, including beaches that are not used by the public.
The first exercise in 1985 was initially an annual exercise by HMAF aimed at improving interoperability between our Land Force and Maritime components.
It has now evolved and become a military event held every-two years.
