Paula Naitoko (59) was released on bail but under very tough conditions after a hearing at the Supreme Court in Nuku’alofa on August 9.
The Senior Customs Officer is charged in relation to a major seizure of illicit drugs on April 23 at the Queen Salote Wharf.
The accused appeared for his bail hearing before Hon Mr Justice Cato on August 9. Details presented during the hearing, that included some of the evidence have been suppressed by the Court so as not to prejudice him because his trial has not been held.
The Crown confirmed that conditions of the bail, includes Naitoko being ordered to remain at his house.
He may only be allowed to go to specific places such as his doctor/hospital, church, court/lawyer which must be carried out under the supervision of a police officer at all times. This is in addition to being put on the no fly list, among other conditions.
Naitoko has been in police custody since his arrest on April 23, after the seizure at the wharf of the illicit drugs, alleged to include 6.7 kilograms of methamphetamine, 625.29 grams of cannabis and 107.29 grams of cannabis oil, which were allegedly smuggled into Tonga in a shipment from the United States.
Also found were illegal firearms, an M4 assault rifle, two Glock pistols and a handgun with relevant ammunition.
He was charged with nine counts that included engaging with others to import illicit drugs and abetting the importation of illegal firearms and ammunition.
His bail was in the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court after the Crown filed for his detainment due to ongoing police investigations.
Meanwhile, he is expected to appear at the Fasi Magistrate’s Court on August 12, as his case is still under the jurisdiction of the lower court.
