Lavulavu fraud trial date delayed [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, August 1, 2019 - 18:48.  Updated on Thursday, August 1, 2019 - 18:49.

'Akosita and 'Etuate Lavulavu. Nuku'alofa, 11 January 2018.

The fraud trial against Vava'u People’s Representative to Parliament, ‘Akosita Lavulavu and her husband, a former Cabinet Minister, ‘Etuate Lavulavu, which was to start in September has been delayed.

The Crown said the trial which was to run from September 2 to October 11 has been vacated due to ‘Akosita not being able to return to Tonga in time.

She remains in New Zealand for medical reasons and is not expected to return to Tonga until October 30.

Meanwhile, a new trial date is expected to be set sometime this month, when the case is called at the Supreme Court in Nuku'alofa.

The couple have been charged with six counts each of knowingly dealing with forged documents and obtaining money by false pretences, relating to a number of irregularities in an audit of the ‘Unuaki ‘o Tonga Royal Institute in 2016.

Earlier in February they both pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.
