Guilty verdict for reckless driver in child’s death [1]

Simi Moala (28) was found guilty by a jury of reckless driving that caused the death of a five-year-old boy at Tatakamotonga last year.

The jury delivered their verdict today after listening to four witnesses from the Crown. The accused did not give evidence nor called any witnesses.

The trial began on July 15 before Lord Chief Justice O.G. Paulsen at the Supreme Court in Nuku'alofa.

Evidence showed on February 23, 2018 at Tatakamotonga the accused drove recklessly at a speed that was dangerous to the public.

He was speeding and overtook two vehicles when his vehicle hit the victim, Mathew Lautaimi (5), who was crossing the road.

From Haveluloto, the accused represented by Siosifa Tu’utafaiva will be sentenced on August 15

The Crown Prosecutor was Lute Fakatou Aonima.
